Build a pack

Enter the hike you're about to do. We count the sticks, you check the mix, and it ships from Boulder in a printed trail sleeve.

Your route

Type the hike in by hand: the numbers from your map or guidebook. It starts on an example route.

Round trip, like 12.4.

Total climbing in feet, digits only, like 3200.

Degrees Fahrenheit, like 78. Over 75 adds a Ridge Salt.

Trailhead to trailhead, like 6 or 7.5. Printed on the sleeve; it does not change the count.

Digits only, like 9400. Over 9,000 ft adds a stick.

Check your order

A flat kraft sleeve printed with the VitaminHill mark on pink granite, four marked stick packs sliding out of it, yellow, white with a pink end, white and red, and the toe of a trail shoe at the edge.
The sleeve and four sticks, in stage order.

What comes in the box

The sticks your route needs and a printed trail sleeve. The sleeve lists the route, the mileage and the order, and each stick's number matches its stage. A Trailhead Pack ships within 2 business days for $3.95. Season Box and Expedition Crate ship free.

The price you see beside the form is the price at the end. No fees show up on the last step.

How the count works

  1. +2.5 mi for every 1,000 ft of climbing, added to the distance. That's trail miles.
  2. 1 stick per 6 trail miles, rounded. Switchback Citrus starts the climb, Summit Recovery takes the finish.
  3. +1 Ridge Salt over 75 F, and another over 85 F.
  4. +1 Ridge Salt when the high point is over 9,000 ft.

The example: 12.4 mi and 3,200 ft is 20.4 trail miles, so 3 sticks, plus 1 for 78 F. Four in all. If the forecast climbs past 85, take the fifth.

When you can skip it

A short, cool walk probably needs water and nothing else. Under 3 trail miles with a high of 75 F or less, the count flags that water is probably enough. It still rounds up to one stick, so use your judgment and leave the order for a bigger day. Water does most of the work either way.
